Am Dienstag gab das Metropolitan Museum of Art das neue Thema für die Met Gala im nächsten Jahr bekannt: „Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology“. Die kommende Ausstellung konzentriert sich auf die Dichotomie zwischen handgemachter Haute Couture und maschinell hergestellter Mode. „Traditionell basierte die Unterscheidung zwischen Haute Couture und Prêt-à-Porter auf dem Handgemachten und dem Maschinengemachten“, erklärt Andrew Bolton, Kurator des Costume Institute. „Aber in letzter Zeit verwischt sich diese Unterscheidung immer mehr, da beide Disziplinen die Praktiken und Techniken der anderen übernommen haben.“
Die Show wird mehr als 100 Modestücke zeigen, sowohl Haute Couture als auch Prt-à-porter. Mehrere handgefertigte Couture-Artikel mit Techniken wie Stickerei, Plissierung und Spitzenarbeit werden maschinell gefertigten Designs gegenübergestellt, die neue Technologien wie Laserschneiden, Thermoformen und Rundstricken präsentieren. Die Ausstellung wird auch mehrere „in Bearbeitung“-Workshops haben, darunter 3-D-Druck, in denen die Öffentlichkeit sehen kann, wie diese Designs Gestalt annehmen.
Das Museum gab außerdem bekannt, dass die Met Gala 2016 am Montag, dem 2. Mai, stattfinden wird und von den Co-Vorsitzenden Idris Elba, Jonathan Ive, Taylor Swift und Anna Wintour veranstaltet wird. Als Ehrenvorsitzende werden Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld und Miuccia Prada fungieren, die Gala und die begleitende Ausstellung werden von Apple gesponsert.
