Pada hari Selasa, Metropolitan Museum of Art mengumumkan tema baru untuk Met Gala tahun depan: “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.” Pameran mendatang akan fokus pada dikotomi antara haute couture buatan tangan dan fashion buatan mesin. “Secara tradisional, perbedaan antara haute couture dan prêt-à-porter didasarkan pada buatan tangan dan mesin,” jelas Andrew Bolton, kurator Institut Kostum. “Namun baru-baru ini perbedaan ini menjadi semakin kabur karena kedua disiplin ilmu telah merangkul praktik dan teknik yang lain.”

Pameran ini akan menampilkan lebih dari 100 busana, baik haute couture maupun ready-to-wear. Beberapa item couture buatan tangan, yang menampilkan teknik seperti bordir, pleating, dan renda, akan disandingkan dengan desain buatan mesin yang menampilkan teknologi baru seperti pemotongan laser, pembentukan termo, dan rajutan melingkar. Pameran ini juga akan memiliki beberapa lokakarya “dalam proses”, termasuk pencetakan 3-D, di mana publik dapat melihat desain ini terbentuk.
